What is a 72 hour kit
Today we are going to talk about 72 hour kits.
What is a 72 hour kit?
72 hour kits are designed around the premise that you might need food, and emergency items to make it through 72 hour period in a time of emergency. For example you need to evacuate to a safe area because something is going on in the area you are in. Fire, Hurricane, Tornado, Flood, Volcano Erruption, you get the idea.
some people have refered to them as a bug out bag.
You want items that will help you survive for the next 3 days without having to rely on help from someone else.
You also want it in a portable fashion for quick access. You might not have time to find everything and pack a bag at the emergency time.
Water is a vital part of surviving in any emergency. So water filters are essential to have. Here are two models that I believe are worthy of consideration.
Just a note on filtering water : If you filter water from a stream or source like a mud puddle.
If you use your nice expensive filter right from the start you are going to plug it up.
It was not meant to be used in this way. You will first want a way to remove the larger debris from the water. I use the small coffee filters (walmart – around $6) to start the water filtering process.
I get out a 1 gallon ziplock type storage container from my 72 hour kit and my stainless steel cup and my coffee filter.
I will put the coffee filter in the top part of the bag in a way that the water has to pass through the filter to get into the bag. Then using the stainless steel cup I put the water from the source into the cup and then pour it into the coffee filter. Once the bag is about filled to the point where it touches the bottom of the filter I will remove the filter and then filter this water with my nice expensive water filter. This will make sure that none of the large particulates clog my nice filter.
Here are some item ideas that others have used in their 72 hour kits.
